Vote for your favourite family car with the Telegraph motoring awards

Telegraph family car of the year

The Telegraph’s online motoring show includes an award for readers’ favourite family car this year. The newspaper is looking for the very best family vehicle, able to cope with the demands of family life, from comfortable seating to storage space to standard equipment that will keep your kids happy on long drives. We would also add benefits like reliability and affordable replacement parts so you can keep costs down when it comes to your MOT and car service.

The Telegraph’s definition of a family car is one that has: “enough room to seat four (five at a squeeze) and their luggage, decent performance and some big-car equipment as standard. It should also feel well built and protective.”

A few familiar cars that are in for the running include:

* the Ford Focus

* the Vauxhall Astra

* the Peugeot 308

* and the Volkswagen Golf (which recently won European Car of the Year)

Other contenders range compact SUVs, estates and hatchbacks, as well as premium offerings from BMW and Audi. The same names appear from last year’s group of best-selling family cars, with the models mentioned above along with the Nissan Qashqai, the Kia Cee’d, and the Honda Civic.

The Telegraph Festival of Motoring online motor show will take place from 29th April to 3rd May 2013. Get involved by voting on the Telegraph website for your favourite family car. You can also vote in other categories, including best executive car, best luxury car, best sports car, best supermini and best SUV.

Does Your SatNav Make You Swear?

Do you turn the air blue when driving with your SatNav? A recent study by Direct Line showed that 55% of drivers end up swearing when using a SatNav compared to 31% who felt the need for profane language without!

And women are worse offenders than men, with 48% of women losing their cool while behind the wheel compared to 40% of men. The study used eye-tracking technology to monitor their driving behaviour to find that only 22% of the participants were actually aware of swearing more than usual.

Unsurprisingly, younger drivers were more susceptible to four-letter words whereas only 15% of motorists aged between 40 and 49 using profanity to make themselves feel better…

It seems that even mild-mannered people are as likely as any other to use expletives when behind the wheel, especially during stressful and irritating situations like being tail-gated or driving behind a slow driver. One of the most annoying instances for the male participants appeared to be when another driver used the outer lane when not overtaking, which was more than twice as likely to cause a man to swear than a woman. For women the worst offender was being cut up by another driver.

Direct Line offered a few tips for avoiding getting irate when driving, such as:

* Making sure you’re comfortable while behind the wheel – having a sore back or neck because of a badly adjusted seat can make you more irritable than usual.

* Plan your journey and make sure you know where you’re going and how to get there – getting lost or accidentally taking a wrong turn is likely to make anyone annoyed.

* Try to rise above it and avoid letting bad or aggressive drivers get to you. You’re more likely to drive recklessly or dangerously if you’re angry.

* Keep distractions to a minimum, including listening to music, eating and drinking.

We can’t help you drive completely stress-free but we can help you to avoid an irritating flat tyre or technical failure while driving – get your car checked out at FastFit Station for your MOT or car service to ensure that breaking down isn’t one of those moments that makes you say something like *************!!!!

EU CO2 Plans Could Save Motorists Thousands

If the EU imposes new restrictions on manufacturers to keep CO2 emissions below 95g per km, motorists could potentially save £3,300 on fuel during their car’s lifetime. This has to be weighed up with the additional cost to vehicles for the innovation, which would be approximately £860, but this would be offset within 3 years due to substantial savings in fuel – around £350 per year.

The report comes from Ricardo-AEA and Cambridge Econometrics and claims that if all European cars and vans met the proposed standard, CO2 emissions could be reduced by 60% by 2050, meeting EU targets and saving almost £30bn each year. With the first of a series of votes on car standards raised in the European Parliament, the report suggests that strict standards are necessary to encourage competitiveness between European car manufacturers.

The Ford Focus ECOnetic already achieves the standard proposed for 2020, and European car makers are striving to match the efficiency of the US proposal which demands a limit of 93g/km by 2025. Another benefit of introducing this new technology is the creation of up to 450,000 new jobs in Europe.

In the meantime, if you have a concern about your exhaust system or your car’s emissions, book your vehicle in at FastFit station in Milton Keynes for an exhaust check.

What is an Interim Car Service?

interim car servicing Milton Keynes

At FastFit Station we offer two types of service: a major service and an interim service. An interim service offers similar checks to a major service but does not include certain maintenance parts that do not usually need to be checked more than once a year. Therefore an interim service is an ideal twice-yearly check up that can see your vehicle through the year. Interim services are usually carried out every 6 months or every 6,000 miles – whichever occurs first.

Why service your car twice a year?

Choosing an interim service helps you to feel confident that your vehicle is in the best possible condition no matter what the weather, the season or the age of your car. For the winter months, preparing your car with an interim service can actually save you money on costly repairs that might  be incurred by the challenges of bad road conditions, grit and ice. Most importantly, maintaining your car regularly keeps you and your passengers safe on the road.

FastFit Station Servicing

At FastFit, we use the same high quality parts as your main dealer does, so we can stamp your service book to ensure your warranty will be upheld after interim or major servicing at any FastFit Station in Milton Keynes.

You can book your interim service online or over the phone at a time that suits you – and with our patented good old fashioned service and friendly technicians we’re sure you’ll leave happy!

car servicing MOT Milton Keynes

“It’s really refreshing, as a woman who knows nothing about how cars work, to be able to take my car for its first MOT to somewhere clean, where I have been able to book in at a time to suit me, where I can work whilst I wait and have a decent coffee, and then – when the MOT is given the all-clear, ask them if they’re sure…because I thought there was a suspension problem. They took the car out for a drive, had it up on the ramp, said they couldn’t see anything to worry about and said that I could bring it back in for another check up at any time if I was worried. They feel trustworthy and put customer service and fair pricing at the forefront of their business. I have already recommended them to friends.”

“Booked online at 9.00 am – car in being tested at 10.00am. Comfortable waiting lounge, friendly staff, free internet access. 30 mins test complete no attempt to rip me off for something I didn’t need.”

Younger motorists skimping on having their car serviced

A recent survey conducted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed that younger drivers are not opting to have their car serviced properly. As we know having regular car servicing helps keep your car in good working order thus keeping them safe, reliable and preventing breakdowns. The poll of 2,000 drivers of various ages revealed that 10 per cent of drivers aged between 18 and 24 never had their car serviced, with this figure rising to 12 per cent among drivers aged 25-34.

It appears these younger motorists are aware of the benefits of having a car serviced but are concerned over the cost and any other maintenance issues that could arise. Holding off car servicing and repairs is a false economy as the cost and risks far outweigh any short-term gains. Your local garage in Milton Keynes offers cheap car servicing and MOT’s by fully trained car technicians. Finding out the price of your service and booking in is easy – simply go online to our website and pop in your registration details to find the service package that is right for your vehicle. The price you see is the price you pay and you don’t even have to hand any cash over into your work is complete and you’re completely satisfied with our good old fashioned service.
